Getting Rail Back on Track
 
 

Peterborough M-P Dean del-Mastro has invited municipal and business leaders to another conference on rail transportation . Del Mastro says Thursday's meeting will discuss a not-for-profit railway authority to oversee freight transportation along the Peterborough-Toronto rail corridor  .


Cobourg Priest Takes Sabbatical


The Cobourg Pastor at the centre of a controversy involving a gay altar server has taken a leave of absence . Father Alan Hood of St . Michaels Parish had been under pressure by a group of parishioners to bar a gay man from serving Holy Communion . The case went to the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal ... but was settled out of court .

Tragedy On 28

A tragic start to the long weekend in Northumberland County.
One person is dead, another injured after a head-on collision on County Road 28 south of Bailieboro Saturday afternoon.
Provincial Police say a car travelling southbound, pulled out into the northbound lanes and collided with a cargo truck.
The driver of the car died at the scene, while the truck driver sustained only minor injuries.
28 was closed for eight hours for a police investigation.
No names have been released.


New Train Station Coming

Work continues on upgrading train service in Cobourg.
It's part of a Federal intiative to improve train stations and railways along the Toronto-Montreal corridor.
Northumberland-Quinte West M-P Rick Norlock says crews have started adding a new track east of town.
Norlock says the 7-million dollar plan includes the rebuild of the existing Cobourg Train Station, which should start later this year.


Construction Continues At Fleming

All campuses are getting an 11-million dollar facelift, which comes from federal infrastructure money.
President Tony Tilley says the improvements will offer students a more modern learning environment.
Tilley says the improvements at the Peterborough campus should be finished by the end of September.


Thousands Of Students Come To Peterborough

Thousands of students are moving into residence at Trent University.
Introductory Seminar Week starts on Tuesday for all new students for the fall semester.
Official start for classes is the 13th.


Next Habitat Build In October

Habitat for Humanity Northumberland will start its next build in Port Hope in October.
A special ground breaking ceremony is set for September 10th at noon at the site of the former Doctor L-B Powers school on Harcourt Street.
The build is set to start on October 12th and run until November 22nd.


Campaign Announcement Wednesday

The United Way of Peterborough is getting set to launch it's next campaign.
C-E-O Heather Zak says many residents are still feeling the pinch from last year's recession.
A breakfast kick-off party is set for Wednesday, where the campaign goal will be announced.


Petes Make Roster Cuts

Sixteen Peterborough Petes hopefuls were cut during training camp Saturday.
The players have been returned to lower tier clubs for another year of development.


Game 7 Monday

The Peterborough Lakers and Brampton Excelsiors will play a winner takes all game 7 Monday at the Memorial Centre.
The Lakers forced game 7 of the MSL Final by beating the Excelsiors 10-4 in Brampton on Thursday.
Winner moves on to the Mann Cup.
